Career guidance

What is a Career Guidance?

The word “guidance” originated back in the 1530s, and is defined as the process of directing conduct.

Career guidance can be defined as a comprehensive, developmental program designed to assist individuals in making and implementing informed educational and occupational choices. In simple words, it is a journey on which people develop to make mature and informed decisions. It is the act of guiding or showing the way; it is the act of seeking advice.

Career guidance is the guidance given to individuals to help them acquire the knowledge, information, skills, and experience necessary to identify career options, and narrow them down to make one career decision. This career decision then results in their social, financial and emotional well-being throughout.

Who may gain from career counseling?

  • Students in grades 9 through 11

A lot of problems that could later occur can be resolved by getting the fundamentals correct from the start. A good start at the proper moment can make all the difference, whether it’s picking the ideal stream, profession, or career ambitions.

  • Student in grades 12 through 13

A student can choose their stream from one of four alternatives (engineering, medicine, humanities, or business), however there are hundreds of possible career paths. It is crucial to obtain career advice from a knowledgeable (and experienced) mentor to ensure that every step of the process, from selecting the best career possibilities to realizing those goals, goes smoothly.

Way forward

Appoint to team, with professionals representing couple of fields such as Engineering, Medicine, Accountancy, Hospitality, Law, Information Technology, financial services etc.

Compile a document for career guidance, which will explain available careers, qualification requirement, entry requirement, pathways, institutions etc.

Form a team of volunteers, train them to conduct discussions on career guidance with grade 9 -13 children. In every school we should appoint teachers responsible for career guidance, they should liaise with the team to conduct career guidance discussions.

– Training of nearly 80 volunteers in order to coach students, including 2 teachers from each school.

– Two training  programs for each class from grade 8 upwards.

– Provision of internships for passed out students.

– Counselling/ mentoring programs.

– Direction of every child to pursue tertiary education.

– A job portal connecting interns and employers.
